# Best Apps for Small Talk Practice in 2026: Which Ones Help?

For unscripted back-and-forth, use an app where an AI plays the stranger and replies to what you say: Speaking Coach has scenes for meeting someone new, the coffee machine, working the room and first dates, in 20 languages, and Sociabl and Parla pair AI conversations with short social-skills lessons in English. Then take it into real life with low-stakes chats every day.

## Why small talk needs different practice

Interviews and speeches can be prepared. Small talk can't, because the other person decides where it goes. The skill is reacting: picking up something they said, asking a follow-up, sharing a small detail about yourself, and not panicking when they give a one-word answer.

So the useful question for any app is simple: **does someone talk back, unpredictably?** Lessons and tips help you know what to do. Only back-and-forth practice makes it automatic.

We make Speaking Coach, one of the apps below. We checked each other app's own App Store page or site in October 2026 and describe only what we saw.

## The apps in more detail

**Speaking Coach (ours).** An AI voice partner plays the other person and reacts to what you actually say. The small talk scenes include Meet someone new, Chat at the coffee machine, Keep a conversation going, Work the room and First date, and you can describe any other situation, such as your partner's parents or a school reunion, for the partner to play. Choose Gentle, Realistic or Tough pressure. If you stall, "Help me" gives you a sentence to start from. Afterwards you see how you sounded, what to keep, and tips that quote your own words, then retry the moment where it died. It works in 20 languages on iPhone and Android, and it's a subscription.

**Sociabl.** Its App Store listing describes speaking aloud to "interactive AI characters that respond naturally", with scores for confidence, clarity and empathy after each session, short lessons on topics like small talk and friendship building, and an assistant for advice on texts and dates. English only, on iPhone. Several App Store reviewers mention a paywall before they could try it. Best for: people who want lessons and practice in one place.

**Parla.** You respond out loud to a realistic scenario with no script, and the AI evaluates your wording, delivery and structure. Skills listed include building rapport, difficult conversations and giving feedback, so it leans toward work conversations. English only, iPhone. The listing shows many plan options, from $9.99 a week to annual plans. Best for: rapport at work more than parties.

**Vocal Image.** Mainly a voice-training app, but its listing describes an AI roleplay where the AI plays the other person, with feedback that shows where filler words crept in. Best for: if your voice goes quiet or flat when you're nervous.

**Duolingo Max.** Duolingo's announcement describes Roleplay with characters in situations like ordering coffee or planning a trip, for English speakers learning Spanish, French, German, Italian or Portuguese. Best for: small talk in a language you're learning. If you speak the language well but freeze, see our [list for non-native speakers](/speaking-coach/best/best-speaking-practice-apps-for-non-native-speakers/).

**General voice assistants.** Gemini Live lets you talk with Google's AI by voice, and you can ask it to play a stranger. It isn't built for practice, so you won't get a structured review of how you did.

**Bodyswaps** offers soft-skills simulations, but its site is aimed at schools, hospitals and companies, and doesn't mention small talk or networking as topics.

## Pick by situation

| Your situation | What to practice | Good starting point |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Networking event | Opening, "What do you do?", leaving politely | Work the room scene; our [networking guide](/speaking-coach/small-talk/networking-event/) |
| Coffee machine at a new job | 60-second chats with people you'll see again | Chat at the coffee machine scene; free small talk drill |
| First date | Follow-up questions, sharing back, not interviewing them | First date scene, or Sociabl's lessons |
| Party where you know no one | Joining a group, keeping it going past three exchanges | Keep a conversation going scene |
| Work rapport | Disagreeing nicely, building trust | Parla |

## Practice outside the app

Apps are a rehearsal. The point is to have more real conversations, so pair them with low-stakes, real-world practice:

1. **One small exchange a day.** Ask a barista, neighbor or colleague one question beyond "How are you?" and follow up once.
2. **Join something with a built-in topic.** A running club, a class or a language exchange gives you an easy first question.
3. **Notice where it dies.** After a real chat, note the moment it went quiet. Rehearse that exact moment in an app or with the free [conversation drill](/speaking-coach/tools/conversation-drill/).
4. **Keep three go-to follow-ups ready.** "How did you get into that?" "What's the best part?" "What's next for you?"

Our guide on [how to keep a conversation going](/speaking-coach/small-talk/how-to-keep-a-conversation-going/) has more lines to try.

## Questions people ask

### Can you really practice small talk with an AI?

Yes, if the AI talks back and reacts to what you say. It's lower stakes than a stranger, so you can try openers and recover from silences without embarrassment. It doesn't replace real people; it gets you ready for them.

### Is there a free app for small talk practice?

Sociabl and Parla are free to download but sell subscriptions. The small talk drill and conversation drill on this site are free in your browser; they measure your answers rather than talking back.

### What is the best app for social anxiety in conversations?

These apps are practice tools, not treatment. If anxiety stops you from talking to people, talk to a doctor or therapist. For general nerves, practicing at a gentle level first, then a realistic one, helps many people.

### How is small talk practice different from interview practice?

Interviews have expected questions you can prepare. Small talk is unscripted, and you share the job of keeping it going, so practice reacting and asking follow-ups rather than polishing answers.

### Which app works for small talk in other languages?

Speaking Coach works in 20 languages. Duolingo Max Roleplay covers five languages for English-speaking learners. Sociabl and Parla are English only.
