# Can You Use ChatGPT Voice Mode to Practice Job Interviews?

Yes. ChatGPT Voice makes a decent mock interviewer if you give it a clear prompt: the role, the question types and an instruction to follow up and wait for you to finish. What it doesn't give you is measured feedback: no words-per-minute, filler counts or pause data from your actual voice. For that, the free Speaking Coach app inside ChatGPT reviews a recording (English, two reviews a day), and the Speaking Coach phone app combines a voice interviewer with that feedback.

## What ChatGPT Voice does well

As of October 2026, OpenAI's help page describes ChatGPT Voice as a free-form spoken conversation inside a chat, on web, iOS and Android. Free accounts get limited access; Plus lists 3 hours in a rolling 24 hours. You can ask it to change its tone or pace, though precise speed controls aren't available.

For interviews, that means:

- **It's always there.** If you already use ChatGPT, there's nothing to install.
- **It can play any interviewer.** A friendly recruiter, a blunt hiring manager, a panel.
- **It can follow up**, if you tell it to. That's the part most people skip.

## A prompt that turns it into a mock interviewer

Paste this into a chat, edit the brackets, then start Voice:

> You are interviewing me for [job title] at [type of company]. Ask one question at a time: two background questions, two behavioral questions and one about why I want the role. After each answer, ask one follow-up about something specific I said. Don't give feedback until I say "end interview". Then tell me which answer was weakest and why. Keep your questions short and wait for me to finish.

Tips that make it work:

1. **Say "wait for me to finish."** Otherwise it may jump in during a pause.
2. **Ask for one question at a time.** A list of five defeats the purpose.
3. **Ask for follow-ups.** "What did you personally do?" is the question that matters.
4. **Save feedback for the end.** Coaching after every answer breaks the rhythm of a real interview.

## What it can't tell you

ChatGPT Voice responds to the words it heard. It doesn't give you measurements of *how* you said them:

- **Your pace.** Nervous speakers often speed up. Typical conversational English is often cited at around 120 to 160 words per minute, and you can't see where you are.
- **Your fillers.** Transcripts tend to drop "um" and "uh", so the model may never see them.
- **Your pauses and freezes.** A four-second silence before an answer is something an interviewer notices.

If you ask "how was my pace?", you'll get a guess, not a measurement. For a free check, our [pace checker](/speaking-coach/tools/pace-checker/) and [filler word counter](/speaking-coach/tools/filler-word-counter/) run in your browser.

## Where Speaking Coach fits

**Speaking Coach in ChatGPT (free).** Type "@Speaking Coach" in ChatGPT, then record or upload your answer. You get your measured pace, filler words and pauses, feedback that quotes your spoken words, and one change to try; then try again and compare. You can attach a CV or job post as background. It's English only, with two reviews per network connection per day. See [how to use it](/speaking-coach/chatgpt/).

**Speaking Coach phone app.** The conversation and the measurements in one place: an AI voice interviewer who reads your CV or job post, asks follow-ups, and lets you set the pressure (Gentle, Realistic or Tough). Afterwards you see pace, fillers, pauses, how quickly you started, and quoted tips, and you can retry one moment for 90 seconds. It works in 20 languages and is a subscription.

## Which should you use?

- **Just starting, no budget:** ChatGPT Voice with the prompt above, plus a free review of your best answer in Speaking Coach in ChatGPT.
- **Interview soon and you know you rush or say "um":** add measured feedback, in ChatGPT or the app.
- **Interview in another language, or you want daily practice that remembers your CV:** the phone app.

## Questions people ask

### Is ChatGPT voice mode free?

As of October 2026, OpenAI's help page says Free accounts get limited voice access and that limits may change. Paid plans list more hours.

### Can ChatGPT tell if I said "um" too much?

Not reliably. It works from a transcript, and transcripts often leave out hesitation sounds. A tool that measures your recording, like Speaking Coach in ChatGPT, counts them directly.

### Does ChatGPT keep my voice recordings?

OpenAI's help page says audio clips from Live and Advanced voice conversations are stored with the chat transcript and kept for 30 days. Check its data controls for current details.

### Is the Speaking Coach app in ChatGPT a live interviewer?

No. It reviews a recording of you speaking. For a live voice interviewer, use ChatGPT Voice with a prompt, or the Speaking Coach phone app.

### How long should a practice session be?

About 10 to 15 minutes: five questions with follow-ups. Short daily sessions beat one long one the night before.
