# Toastmasters Alternatives: How to Practice Without a Club?

The closest alternative is an online Toastmasters club, which you can join from home. Without a club, combine two things: frequent private practice out loud (a speaking app, recording yourself, or a friend) and occasional live audiences (an improv or speaking class, a work meeting, a private coach). No single option replaces everything a club gives you, so pick by what you're missing.

## What a Toastmasters club actually gives you

Before replacing a club, it helps to know what you'd be replacing. As of October 2026, Toastmasters describes clubs as places to practice and get peer feedback, in person, online or hybrid. Membership is $72 billed every six months, plus any club dues and a one-time $25 new-member fee, and guests can visit free. A meeting runs on roles, each listed on its site:

- **Prepared speeches**, worked through its Pathways program (6 paths, in 6 languages).
- **Evaluators** who give spoken and written feedback on each speech.
- **Table Topics**, short impromptu answers to a surprise question.
- **A timer, an Ah-Counter who notes filler sounds, and a grammarian.**
- **A room of real people**, which is the part that makes your heart race.

Any alternative should cover the parts you need. Most people need two: frequent practice, and some real audiences.

## Before you rule it out: online clubs

If the problem is "no club near me" or "I can't get across town on a Tuesday", the Toastmasters [club finder](https://www.toastmasters.org/find-a-club) lets you filter for clubs that accept online attendance. You get the same roles and evaluations from your kitchen table, and you can visit as a guest first. This is the only option on this page that replaces the whole club.

## The alternatives and what each replaces

| Option | Replaces | Doesn't replace | Best if |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Online Toastmasters club | Almost everything | The in-room nerves | Distance or travel is the problem |
| Improv class | Table Topics, thinking on your feet, a live room | Prepared speeches, timing feedback | You freeze when put on the spot |
| Speaking course or workshop | Structure, a teacher, deadlines | Ongoing practice after it ends | You want a fixed start and end date |
| Private speaking coach | Expert evaluation, tailored to you | Peer audience, low cost | A high-stakes talk is coming |
| Speaking practice app | Frequent reps, timer, filler counts | Real human reactions | Evenings and nerves are the barrier |
| Recording yourself | Self-evaluation | Anyone else's view | You want to start tonight for free |
| Speaking up at work | Real stakes, a real audience | Structured feedback | You need visible confidence at work |

## If time is the problem

A club meeting takes an evening, and you might speak for seven minutes. Short daily practice gets you more speaking minutes. Three ways to do that:

1. **Record yourself** on your phone answering one question a day for two minutes. Listen back once, note one thing. Our [guide to recording yourself](/speaking-coach/guides/record-yourself-speaking/) explains how to review it without cringing.
2. **Use a delivery app** for the Ah-Counter and timer parts. Orai, for example, lists feedback on filler words, pace, clarity and energy (English, as of October 2026). PowerPoint's free Speaker Coach does similar for slide rehearsals.
3. **Use a partner app for Table Topics.** Speaking Coach, which we make, gives you an AI voice partner who plays your audience, interviewer or a stranger, follows up on what you said, and shows your pace, fillers and long pauses, with tips quoting your words. It runs on iPhone and Android in 20 languages.

## If nerves are the problem

Some people avoid clubs because standing up in front of strangers feels impossible right now. That's a fair reason to build up in steps rather than skip live audiences forever:

1. **Alone, out loud.** Say your speech to an empty room until the words come easily.
2. **To a voice that reacts.** An app partner or a friend on the phone. Nobody is looking at you.
3. **To one or two people you trust.**
4. **To a small group:** an improv class, a work meeting, or a club as a guest, where you can just watch the first time.

Each step should feel slightly uncomfortable, not terrifying. Our guide to [public speaking anxiety](/speaking-coach/guides/public-speaking-anxiety/) covers what to do in the moment.

## What no app or class gives you

Toastmasters' strongest feature is a group of people who show up every week for each other. Nothing on this page copies the friendships, the leadership roles or the habit of being expected somewhere. If you can find an online club that meets at a workable hour, try that first. Use the other options to fill the weeks in between.

## Questions people ask

### Is there an online version of Toastmasters?

Yes. As of October 2026, Toastmasters says clubs can meet in person, online or hybrid, and its club finder lets you filter for online attendance. Guests can visit without paying.

### How much does Toastmasters cost?

Its site lists $72 billed every six months, plus any club dues and a one-time $25 new-member fee, as of October 2026. Club dues vary, so ask the club.

### Is an improv class better than Toastmasters?

For thinking on your feet, improv is excellent. For prepared speeches with timing and written evaluation, a club is better. Many people do both.

### Can an app replace Toastmasters?

No. An app gives you many more practice minutes and measured feedback, but not a room of real people. Use one alongside live audiences, not instead of them.

### What should I practice first without a club?

Your Ice Breaker: four to six minutes about yourself. Our [Ice Breaker guide](/speaking-coach/speeches/icebreaker-speech/) gives a structure, and it is a good first speech whether or not you join a club later.
