# What is a call to action in a speech? Definition and example

A call to action is the specific thing you ask your audience to do at the end of a speech or presentation: approve a plan, sign up, try something, vote. A strong one names one action, makes it easy and says when, for example "Before you leave today, put your name on the volunteer sheet by the door."

## What makes a call to action work

- **One action.** Three asks at once usually means none get done.
- **Specific.** "Support the project" is vague. "Reply yes to my email by Friday" is not.
- **Doable soon.** Something people can start today or this week.
- **Tied to your main point,** so it feels like the obvious next step.
- **Said last.** If there's a Q&A, repeat the ask after it, so it's the final thing people hear.

## Example closing lines

Made-up examples for different talks:

| Talk | Call to action |
| --- | --- |
| Team update | "I need a yes or no on the new vendor by Thursday at noon." |
| Pitch to managers | "Give us four weeks and one designer to run the pilot. I'll report back on the 30th." |
| Training session | "Tomorrow, use the checklist on one customer call and tell me what didn't fit." |
| Class persuasive speech | "Next time you buy a phone, ask the shop how many years of updates it gets." |
| Fundraising dinner | "There's a card on your table. Fill it in before dessert." |
| Wedding toast | "Please raise your glasses to Sam and Priya." |

A toast is a good reminder that every talk has a call to action, even if it's only "raise your glass".

## Weak versus strong

| Weak | Stronger |
| --- | --- |
| "Think about it." | "Pick one meeting this week to cancel, and see if anyone notices." |
| "Any questions?" as the last line | Take questions, then close with your ask. |
| "We should all do better on this." | "Starting Monday, every ticket gets an owner within an hour." |

## Questions people ask

### Does every speech need a call to action?

Persuasive talks and pitches do. Informative talks can end with a takeaway instead, though a small next step ("try this tonight") still helps.

### Where does the call to action go?

At the end, after your strongest point. You can preview it early ("By the end I'll ask you for one thing") so people listen for it.

### How long should the call to action be?

One or two sentences. Pause before it, say it slowly, then stop.

### Is a call to action pushy?

Not if it fits what you've just argued. Leaving people unsure what to do is more frustrating than asking clearly.
