# What is the CAR method? Definition and example answer

The CAR method is a way to answer behavioral interview questions in three parts: Challenge (the problem you faced), Action (what you did) and Result (what changed). It is a shorter alternative to STAR because the situation and task are folded into one opening line about the challenge.

## The three parts

| Part | What it answers | Length |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Challenge** | What was the problem, and why did it matter? | One or two sentences |
| **Action** | What did *you* do, step by step? | Most of the answer |
| **Result** | What changed, ideally with a number? | One or two sentences |

## A compact example

Example answer to "Tell me about a problem you solved", with made-up details:

> **Challenge:** "Our clinic's phone line had a 20-minute wait on Monday mornings, and patients were giving up and walking in instead, which jammed reception."

> **Action:** "I pulled three weeks of call logs and saw most Monday calls were repeat prescription requests. I set up a separate voicemail option for those, wrote a script for it, and trained the two receptionists to clear it by noon."

> **Result:** "Within a month the Monday wait was under five minutes, and walk-ins dropped enough that reception had a queue only twice."

That's about 90 words, roughly 40 seconds out loud.

## CAR vs STAR

Both tell the same kind of story. [STAR](/speaking-coach/glossary/star-method/) separates Situation and Task, which helps when the context is unusual and needs explaining. CAR gets to the action faster, which suits phone screens, rapid-fire panels and anyone who tends to spend too long on background. For when to pick which, see the [CAR method guide](/speaking-coach/guides/car-method/).

## Questions people ask

### What does CAR stand for?

Challenge, Action, Result. Some versions use Context instead of Challenge; the idea is the same.

### Is CAR better than STAR?

Neither is better. CAR is shorter; STAR gives more room for context. Use whichever keeps your answer clear.

### How long should a CAR answer be?

About 40 to 90 seconds. Let the interviewer ask for more detail.

### What if my result has no number?

Use a concrete change instead: what people said, what stopped happening, or what the team did differently afterwards.
