# What is a follow-up question? Definition and examples

A follow-up question builds on what the other person just said, asking for more detail, a reason, an example or a feeling. In conversation, it shows you were listening and keeps the talk going. In interviews, interviewers use follow-ups to test how deep your answer goes, and you can use them too.

## Definition

A first question opens a topic. A follow-up goes further into what the person actually said, instead of jumping to a new topic. That's what makes a conversation feel like a conversation rather than a checklist.

## Types of follow-up, with examples

Example: someone says, "I just got back from a week of hiking in Scotland."

| Type | Asks for | Example follow-up |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Detail | More specifics | "Where did you stay?" |
| Reason | Why | "What made you pick Scotland?" |
| Example | A specific moment | "What was the best day?" |
| Feeling | Their reaction | "Was it as tough as you expected?" |
| Clarification | What they meant | "When you say hiking, are we talking mountains?" |
| Next | What happens now | "Are you planning another one?" |

Most good follow-ups are [open-ended questions](/speaking-coach/glossary/open-ended-question/) that pick up one word from their answer.

## In interviews

Interviewers follow up to see whether your story holds up and what your own part was. Common examples:

- "What exactly did *you* do, as opposed to the team?"
- "How did you measure that result?"
- "What would you do differently?"
- "What happened next?"

You can follow up too. At the end of an interview, a question that builds on something they said earlier ("You mentioned the team is growing. What will the new hires focus on?") stands out more than a generic one. See [what to ask at the end of an interview](/speaking-coach/interview-questions/do-you-have-any-questions-for-us/).

Practising with a partner who follows up on what you actually said, as the Speaking Coach AI partner does, is closer to a real interview than rehearsing a fixed list of questions.
