# What is impostor syndrome? Definition and example when speaking

Impostor syndrome is the persistent feeling that you aren't as capable as other people think and that you'll be "found out", even when your record shows otherwise. It's a common description of an experience, not a medical diagnosis. When speaking, it often shows up as over-apologising, playing down your results or dreading questions you might not be able to answer.

## How it shows up when you speak

| Moment | What it can sound like | A steadier version |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Opening a presentation | "This probably isn't that interesting, but…" | "Here's what we found." |
| Describing your work in an interview | "I just helped out a bit with the launch." | "I ran the testing for the launch." |
| Talking about a success | "Honestly, I was lucky." | "The timing helped, and I moved fast on it." |
| Asking a question in a meeting | "Sorry, this is probably a stupid question." | "One question about the timeline:" |
| Being asked something you don't know | Freezing, or bluffing an answer | "I don't know yet. I'll check and send it today." |

Listeners usually take your framing at face value. If you say your work was minor, many will believe you.

## Why it matters in interviews

Interviews ask you to describe your own contribution. Impostor feelings push people to say "we" for everything, skip numbers, or end answers with a shrug. Being accurate is the goal: claim what you did, credit what others did, and say the result plainly.

## General tips

1. Before an interview or talk, write down three things you did and the result of each, as facts.
2. Say them out loud until they stop feeling like bragging. Cutting [hedging words](/speaking-coach/glossary/hedging-language/) such as "just" and "kind of" helps.
3. Prepare a line for questions you can't answer. See [how to answer a question when you don't know](/speaking-coach/guides/answer-question-you-dont-know/).

If these feelings are constant, or affect your sleep, mood or work, talk to a doctor or a mental health professional.

## Questions people ask

### Is impostor syndrome a mental illness?

It isn't a formal diagnosis. It's a name for a common pattern of self-doubt. If it causes you real distress, a professional can help.

### Should I mention impostor syndrome in an interview?

There's usually no need. Focus on describing what you did accurately.

### Is impostor syndrome the same as stage fright?

No. [Stage fright](/speaking-coach/glossary/stage-fright/) is fear in the moment of performing; impostor syndrome is doubting that you deserve to be there at all. They can happen together.

### How do I talk about achievements without sounding arrogant?

Stick to what you did and what changed, with a real number if you have one, and credit others where it's due.
