# What is a keynote speech? Definition and example structure

A keynote speech is the main talk at a conference or event, given by a featured speaker to set the theme for everything that follows. Keynotes often run 20 to 60 minutes and are built around one central idea, carried by stories and ending with a clear message for the audience.

## Definition

The keynote is the talk the organisers put front and centre, usually at the start of a conference or a day, sometimes at the close. Its job is not to teach one narrow skill but to frame the event: why the topic matters now and what the audience should carry into the rest of the programme.

## How it differs from other talks

| Talk | Typical length | Its job |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Keynote | 20–60 minutes | Set the theme for the whole event |
| Breakout session | 30–60 minutes | Teach one topic to a smaller group |
| Panel | 45–60 minutes, shared | Several views on one question |
| Lightning talk | About 5 minutes | One point, fast |

## Example structure for a 30-minute keynote

| Part | Time | What happens |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Opening | 0–3 min | A [hook](/speaking-coach/glossary/speech-hook/): a story or question tied to the theme |
| The big idea | 3–6 min | One sentence the audience could repeat later |
| Three supporting points | 6–24 min | Each with a story, example or piece of evidence |
| What it means for this room | 24–28 min | How the idea applies to their work |
| Close | 28–30 min | Return to the opening story; one clear ask |

Example big idea for a nursing conference: "The best handover is the one the next shift can repeat back to you."

At a typical presentation pace of about 130 to 150 words per minute, 30 minutes is roughly 3,900 to 4,500 spoken words. The [speech length calculator](/speaking-coach/tools/speech-length-calculator/) converts for other lengths. For writing and delivering one, see [how to give a keynote speech](/speaking-coach/presentations/keynote/).

## Questions people ask

### Who gives the keynote?

Usually a featured speaker the organisers invite: a leader in the field, an executive, or someone with a story that fits the theme.

### How long is a keynote speech?

Most fall between 20 and 60 minutes. Ask the organiser for your exact slot and whether it includes questions.

### What is the difference between a keynote and a plenary?

A plenary is any session the whole audience attends. A keynote is usually a plenary, but not every plenary session is a keynote.

### Do keynote speakers use slides?

Many do, mostly for images and a few words. Some speak without slides. The talk should still work if the projector fails.
