# What is mirroring in conversation? Definition and examples

Mirroring is subtly matching the other person in a conversation: their posture, energy, pace or the words they use. Done lightly, it signals that you're paying attention and helps build rapport. In its verbal form, you repeat a few of their key words back as a question to invite them to say more.

## Definition

People often fall into step with each other without trying: leaning in at the same time, speaking at a similar pace. Mirroring is doing a light version of that on purpose. It isn't copying. It's adjusting toward the other person so the conversation feels in sync.

## Types of mirroring, with examples

| Type | What you match | Example |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Posture | How they sit or stand | They lean back and relax; you loosen your posture a little |
| Energy | Their volume and enthusiasm | They speak quietly about a sad event; you lower your voice, not raise it |
| Pace | How fast they talk | A slow, thoughtful speaker; you slow down too |
| Words | Their key terms | They say "my team"; you say "your team", not "your staff" |
| Verbal mirror | Their last few words, as a question | "It's been a chaotic month." "Chaotic?" |

## Example: a verbal mirror

Example exchange at a networking event, made up:

> **Them:** "I've just moved over to the data side."

> **You:** "The data side?"

> **Them:** "Yeah, I was in sales for six years, and I kept building spreadsheets nobody asked for, so they finally let me do it full-time."

Two words got a whole story. Follow up on what they share, and use mirrors sparingly: two or three in a conversation, not every reply. Pair them with [active listening](/speaking-coach/glossary/active-listening/) and [paraphrasing](/speaking-coach/glossary/paraphrasing/).

## When it backfires

| Mistake | Why | Instead |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Copying every gesture straight away | People notice and it feels manipulative | Match the general mood, with a delay |
| Imitating an accent | It can come across as mocking | Keep your own voice |
| Mirroring anger | It escalates | Stay calm and slightly slower |
| Repeating words on every turn | It sounds like a technique | Mix with real questions |
