# What is the rule of three in speaking? Definition and examples

The rule of three is grouping ideas, examples or words in threes, because a set of three is easy to follow, easy to remember and feels complete. In a speech it can shape the whole talk (three main points) or a single line, such as "faster, cheaper and safer".

## Definition

Listeners can't reread what you said, so they rely on patterns. Two items can feel like a comparison, and long lists start to blur. Three gives a beginning, a middle and an end, with a natural rhythm that tells people the list is finished. That is why so many talks have three main points and so many closing lines have three beats.

## Example lines

These are made-up examples of the pattern for different occasions.

| Occasion | Example line |
| --- | --- |
| Wedding toast | "Sam is loyal, Sam is funny, and Sam is, finally, on time." |
| Team update | "This week we fixed the login bug, cleared the backlog and hired our new designer." |
| Sales pitch | "It's quicker to set up, cheaper to run and easier to train people on." |
| Interview answer | "I'd bring three things: process, patience and a lot of spreadsheets." |
| Eulogy | "She taught us to cook, to argue fairly and to forgive." |
| Presentation close | "Start small, measure weekly, and share what you learn." |

Notice the trick in the toast: the first two items set a pattern and the third bends it for a laugh.

## Where to use it

- **Structure:** three main points in a 5- to 10-minute talk. Announce them with [signposting](/speaking-coach/glossary/signposting/): "I'll cover three things."
- **Lists:** three examples instead of seven.
- **Closings:** a final line in three short parts, said slowly.

## Mistakes to avoid

| Mistake | Why it hurts | Instead |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Inventing a weak third item | The filler point is the one people remember | Use two strong points |
| Every sentence in threes | It starts to sound like a sales script | Save it for key moments |
| Three long clauses | The rhythm disappears | Keep each item to a few words |

## Questions people ask

### Why does the rule of three work?

Three items are few enough to remember and enough to form a pattern, so the list sounds complete.

### Do I always need three main points?

No. If you have two strong points, use two. The rule is a tool, not a requirement.

### What is a tricolon?

The rhetorical name for a sentence made of three parallel parts, such as "quick, clear and kind."

### Can I use the rule of three in interviews?

Yes. "I'd say three things" helps you and the interviewer keep track. Back each with an example.
