# What is the STAR method? Definition and example answer

The STAR method is a way to answer behavioral interview questions as a short story in four parts: Situation (the context), Task (what you had to do), Action (what you did) and Result (what happened). Most of the answer should be the Action, and the whole thing usually fits in one to two minutes.

## The four parts

| Part | What it answers | How much of the answer |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Situation** | Where were you, and what was going on? | One or two sentences |
| **Task** | What was your job or the problem to solve? | One sentence |
| **Action** | What did *you* do, step by step? | About half |
| **Result** | What changed, and how do you know? | One or two sentences, with a real number if you have one |

## A compact example

Example answer to "Tell me about a time you fixed a problem under pressure", with made-up details:

> **Situation:** Two days before a client's website launch, the booking form stopped sending emails.

> **Task:** I was the only developer free, so fixing it before launch was mine.

> **Action:** I checked the logs first, found the email service was rejecting our sender address after a settings change, rolled the change back, and added a test that submits the form every hour and alerts me if it fails.

> **Result:** The form worked again that afternoon, the launch went ahead on time, and the hourly test caught a similar failure a month later.

Spoken aloud, that is about 45 seconds: short enough to leave room for follow-up questions.

## Where STAR answers go wrong

- **A long Situation.** A minute of background, then ten seconds of action.
- **"We" all the way through.** The interviewer can't tell what you did yourself.
- **No Result,** or a result that belongs to the team, not you.

## Questions people ask

### What does STAR stand for?

Situation, Task, Action, Result. Some people add a second R for Reflection, what you learned; that version is called [STARR](/speaking-coach/glossary/starr-method/).

### How long should a STAR answer be?

One to two minutes spoken, which is roughly 150 to 250 words. If it runs longer, cut the Situation first.

### Is STAR only for job interviews?

It's built for behavioral interviews, but it works anywhere someone asks "Tell me about a time…": performance reviews, promotion cases or scholarship interviews.

### What is the difference between STAR and CAR?

CAR (Context, Action, Result) folds the Situation and Task into one opening line, so answers come out shorter.
