Tell me about a time you worked in a team: STAR answer examples

Tell one story about a team result, but make it clear what you did inside it. Use STAR: a sentence on the team and goal, your specific part, the two or three things you did that helped others succeed, and the shared result. Say "I" for your actions and "we" for the outcome, and keep it to about 90 seconds.

The problem with most teamwork answers

Most people answer this with a story where "we" did everything. "We had a tight deadline, we split the work, we pulled together and we delivered." The interviewer finishes the answer knowing the team was good, but not whether you were. They aren't hiring the team.

The fix is simple: tell a team story, but give your own role a clear spotlight. The interviewer wants to hear what you did that made the team work better. That might be doing your part reliably, helping a teammate, connecting two people who weren't talking, or taking on the unglamorous job no one wanted.

STAR, focused on your part

Use the STAR structure, with one change: make the task about your role on the team.

  1. Situation (15 seconds). The team, its size, and the goal. "I was one of five people launching a new menu across three restaurants."
  2. Task (one sentence). Your specific job on the team. "My part was training front-of-house staff on the new dishes."
  3. Action (45 seconds). What you did, including at least one thing that helped others do their part. This is where the teamwork lives.
  4. Result (15 seconds). The team outcome, with a number if you have one, plus what your part contributed.

Read the STAR method guide for more on the structure. About 90 seconds is the target, or roughly 200–230 words.

The "I and we" check

Before you practise, write out your answer and look at each sentence.

Sentence is aboutUseExample
The team's goal or situation"we" or "the team""The team had six weeks to launch."
Something you did"I""I built the shared tracker."
Something you did with one other person"she and I""The designer and I agreed a weekly check-in."
The final result"we""We launched on time."
Your contribution to that result"I""My tracker meant nobody missed a dependency."

If most of your action sentences start with "we", rewrite them.

Example answers

These use made-up details to show the shape. Swap in your own team.

Example answer for a marketing role

"Last spring I was one of four people on a product launch campaign: a designer, a copywriter, a paid-ads specialist and me as the social media lead. We had six weeks. My part was the organic social plan. Early on I noticed the designer was getting requests from all three of us in different chats, and she was falling behind. I suggested a single request board with due dates, set it up that afternoon, and moved my own requests into it first so the others would follow. I also started sharing my posting schedule with the ads specialist so we didn't promote the same thing on the same day. We launched on time, and the campaign brought in more sign-ups than the previous two launches. The designer kept using the board for the next project."

Example answer for a nurse or healthcare role

"On a busy medical ward, I was one of three nurses on a night shift with 24 patients, and one colleague was newly qualified. My job was my own eight patients, but around 2am she had two patients deteriorate at once. I covered her other patients' observations for an hour while she worked with the doctor, and I kept the third nurse updated so the rest of the ward was covered. Before handover, I sat with her for ten minutes to make sure her notes were complete. Both patients were stable by morning, and the shift handed over on time."

Example answer for a recent graduate

"In my final-year engineering project, five of us designed a small water filter for a local charity. I was responsible for testing. Halfway through, our design and testing were out of sync: the design team kept changing the prototype, and my test results were out of date before I'd finished. I suggested we freeze the design every Friday and I'd test that version the following week. I also wrote up each test as a one-page summary so the design team could see results without reading full reports. We delivered a working prototype that met the charity's flow target, and my test summaries became part of our final report."

Have a second story ready

Behavioral interviews often ask several teamwork-flavoured questions: working in a team, a conflict with a coworker, and a time you showed leadership. Prepare a different story for each, so you're not stretching one example across three questions.

Saying the stories out loud matters more than writing them, because the "we" habit only shows up when you speak. Speaking Coach's interviewer follows up on your actual answer, so if your action part is vague, it asks "What did you personally do?"

Questions people ask

Can I use a team from school or sports?

Yes, especially early in your career. Keep the setting short and focus on your part, the friction and the result.

What if my role on the team was small?

That's fine. A small role done well, plus one thing you did to help others, makes a strong answer. Don't inflate it.

Should I mention problems with teammates?

Briefly, as the challenge you helped solve. Don't criticise anyone; describe the situation, not the person.

How is this different from "Do you prefer working alone or in a team?"

That one asks for a preference. This one asks for a past story with evidence. See working alone or in a team.

How long should my answer be?

About 90 seconds. If they want more, they'll ask a follow-up.
