Speaking Coach vs ELSA Speak: Accent Drills or Real Conversation?

Choose ELSA Speak if people misunderstand specific sounds when you speak English: it scores pronunciation and maps your speaking to IELTS, TOEFL and CEFR, and it is the better tool for that. Choose Speaking Coach if you're understood but freeze, ramble or rush in real situations like interviews and meetings: it gives you a partner who talks back and never rates your accent. Many non-native speakers benefit from both.

Two different problems

Non-native speakers usually have one of two problems, sometimes both:

  1. "People don't understand some of my words." That's pronunciation: specific sounds, stress, intonation.
  2. "People understand me, but I freeze, ramble or speed up when it matters." That's conversation under pressure: finding words in real time, structuring an answer, staying calm when someone follows up.

ELSA is built mainly for the first. Speaking Coach, which we make, is built only for the second. Neither fixes the other's problem well.

Where ELSA is the better choice

Be clear on this: if your main problem is pronunciation, use ELSA. It is built to hear individual sounds and tell you which ones to fix, and Speaking Coach does not do that at all. ELSA is also the better pick if:

  • you're preparing for IELTS, TOEFL or TOEIC speaking and want a predicted score;
  • you want to target a specific accent (American, British or Australian);
  • you like short, structured lessons that adapt to your level.

Where Speaking Coach is the better choice

  • You're understood, but you freeze. A partner who asks a follow-up you didn't expect is the practice you need, not another drill.
  • You have a specific situation coming. A job interview in English (the interviewer reads your CV and the job post), a presentation (swipe through your PDF slides as you speak), a weekly update to your manager, small talk with new colleagues.
  • You don't want your accent judged. Speaking Coach focuses on whether you were clear: pace, fillers, pauses, and what you said. It never rates your accent or personality.
  • You want to switch languages. You can practice an interview in Spanish today and English tomorrow; it works in 20 languages.
  • You get stuck mid-sentence. Say "Help me" for a sentence to start from, or "I need a moment" to pause.

ELSA now has conversation features too. The difference is focus: ELSA's feedback centers on how you pronounce; Speaking Coach's centers on how the conversation went.

Using both

A simple routine if you have both problems:

  1. 5 minutes of ELSA on the two or three sounds that cause real misunderstandings.
  2. 10 minutes of conversation practice on a real situation you have coming up, in Speaking Coach or with a person.
  3. Once a week, a real conversation with a colleague, tutor or language partner.

What "clear" means to a listener

Listeners rarely need you to sound native. They need you to slow down slightly, pause between ideas, and stress the important word. Our guide to being understood with an accent covers those habits, and the free pace checker shows whether you rush when nervous. For work updates, see how to give a clear team meeting update.
