Speaking Coach vs Interviewing.io: AI Practice or Human Mock?
Use interviewing.io when you need a senior engineer's judgment: as of October 2026 its anonymous mocks start at $179 each, with written feedback, and its AI Interviewer for coding and system design is free. Use Speaking Coach (our app) for the many cheap repetitions before that: a voice interviewer that reads your CV, follows up, and shows your pace and filler words, on a monthly or yearly subscription rather than a price per session. Most candidates get the best value from daily AI reps plus one or two paid human mocks at the end.
Who we are, and what we checked
We make Speaking Coach. We read interviewing.io's home page and FAQ in October 2026, and every fact about it below comes from those two pages.
This isn't really a contest. Interviewing.io sells expert human judgment, priced per session. Speaking Coach sells spoken practice on a subscription, not by the session. The question is how many of each you need.

The cost-per-rep tradeoff
A rep is one full attempt at an answer with feedback. Getting good at interviews takes many of them, and they're not all worth the same.
At interviewing.io's starting price, five human mocks cost at least $895 and ten cost at least $1,790. Company-specific interviewers can cost more. That buys you something an app can't: a person who has made hiring decisions telling you whether you'd pass.
AI practice is cheap per rep, so you can use it for the repetitive part: the twelfth run of your conflict story, the fifth attempt at a 90-second "tell me about yourself", the follow-up you keep fumbling. Speaking Coach's Retry this moment gives you 90 seconds on the exact answer that went wrong, then shows what changed.
A sensible split: spend the cheap reps fixing everything you can hear yourself, then spend the expensive ones on what you can't judge alone.
When a human interviewer is worth paying for
- Final loops at large tech companies. A senior engineer who has run that loop knows the bar. One session in the last week can tell you whether you're on it.
- System design calibration. Whether your design is senior-level is a judgment call an AI speaking partner can't make. Speaking Coach won't grade your architecture at all.
- Staff or manager levels. Scope, influence and judgment are hard to self-assess. Interviewing.io lists staff-level and engineering-management mocks.
- You keep failing at the same stage and don't know why. An outside expert can spot what you can't.
When AI practice is enough
- Behavioral rounds. Most failures here are delivery: rambling, too much background, no clear result. Our software engineer interview questions page has the common ones to rehearse.
- Early in your search. Paying $179 to discover you say "um" every five words is expensive. A free check with our filler word counter will tell you that.
- Non-English interviews. Speaking Coach works in 20 languages.
- Coding practice on a budget. Interviewing.io's own AI Interviewer is free for coding and system design. Use it.
A practical plan
- Weeks 1–3: daily 10–15 minute spoken practice on behavioral answers and your introduction.
- Alongside: free coding and system design practice, including interviewing.io's AI Interviewer.
- Week 4: one paid human mock in your weakest area. Note the two biggest gaps.
- Fix those gaps with daily reps, then book a second human mock only if the first showed you were far off.
Questions people ask
How much does interviewing.io cost?
As of October 2026, its FAQ says interviews start at $179, and the price varies by subject and by whether you want an interviewer from a specific company. It offers a full refund if you're unhappy.
Is interviewing.io anonymous?
Yes. Its FAQ says interviewers don't see your information and you decide how much to reveal. Sessions have voice but no video.
Does interviewing.io have a free option?
Its FAQ says its AI Interviewer is free and covers coding and system design in the style of a large-tech-company interview.
Can Speaking Coach replace a human mock interview?
For practice volume and delivery, mostly yes. For an expert verdict on whether you meet a specific company's bar, no. Use both if the role matters.
Is Speaking Coach good for coding interviews?
Not for writing code: it has no code editor. It helps with the talking parts: explaining your approach, your projects and your behavioral stories.
