What is a mock interview? Definition and how it works
A mock interview is a practice interview that copies a real one: someone plays the interviewer, asks the questions you're likely to get, follows up, and gives you feedback afterwards. It can be run by a friend, a mentor, a university career office, a paid coach or an AI practice partner. Its value comes from answering out loud, under some pressure, before it counts.
How a mock interview works
- Pick the real target. Share the job post and your CV with whoever plays the interviewer.
- Prepare questions. A mix of common ones ("Tell me about yourself"), behavioral ones and anything specific to the role.
- Run it in real conditions. Same format (video, phone or in person), same length, no stopping to restart.
- Expect follow-ups. "What exactly did you do?" or "What would you change?" are where most answers are tested.
- Get feedback right after, while it's fresh: what worked, what was vague, how you sounded.
- Redo the weakest answer straight away, so you leave with an improved version.
Who can run one
| Option | Good for | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Friend or family member | Free, low pressure, a first run | May go easy on you; may not know your field |
| University or school career office | Knows hiring, often free for students | Limited appointments |
| Mentor or peer in your field | Realistic technical and role questions | Their time is scarce |
| Paid interview coach | Tailored, expert feedback | Cost |
| AI practice partner | Available any time, as often as you like | Not a human hiring manager; check what feedback it really gives |
Speaking Coach is one AI option: you add your CV and the job post, the interviewer asks about your real experience and follows up on what you said, and afterwards you see your pace, filler words and tips that quote your own words.
What you get from it
- Answers that hold up when you say them out loud, not just in your head.
- Practice with follow-up questions, which you can't rehearse alone.
- Timing: most people find their answers run long the first time.
- Less surprise on the day, which helps with nerves.
