Speaking Coach vs Big Interview: Which Prepares You Better?
Pick Big Interview if you are new to interviewing or your university career center already gives you access: as of October 2026 it pairs 170 video lessons with recorded practice and AI feedback. Pick Speaking Coach (our app) if you already know the basics and want spoken reps with a voice interviewer that reads your CV and job post, follows up on what you said, and works in 20 languages. Many people do best with the lessons first, then live practice.
The short version
We make Speaking Coach, so weigh our view accordingly. We checked Big Interview's own site, its App Store listing and a university's guide to its AI interview in October 2026, and we only state what we saw there.
These two tools answer different questions. Big Interview answers "How do interviews work and what makes a good answer?" Speaking Coach answers "Can I say my answer out loud, under a bit of pressure, when the interviewer pushes back?" If you don't yet know what the STAR method is or how to handle a salary question, a course is the faster start. If you know what to say but freeze or ramble when you say it, you need reps.

How Big Interview works
As of October 2026, Big Interview's home page describes four parts: Learn to Interview (170 video lessons in 12 categories), Practice with Interview Simulator, Get Feedback from VideoAI on delivery and clarity, and Big Resume for resume feedback. It also lists an interactive answer builder, step-by-step learning paths, salary negotiation training and progress tracking.
Its AI mock, called PracticeAI, is described in a quick start guide published by William & Mary's career center. You pick a job preset or paste a job description, optionally upload your resume, and an AI interviewer named "Eve" asks the first question. You click Start Recording, answer, then Save Answer and Continue. The next question "directly relates to your previous answer" or probes a point you made. At the end you get feedback on clarity, confidence and how well your answers matched the role, plus sample answers.
Big Interview sells to job seekers directly, and its home page also names education career centers, government workforce agencies and nonprofits as customers. That guide asks students to log in with their university credentials, which is typical: many people use it free through their school.
How Speaking Coach works
You add your CV, the job post or your notes, and an AI voice interviewer asks about your actual experience: "tell me about yourself", "explain your experience with an example", questions that test thinking under pressure. You answer by talking, and it follows up on what you said. You choose Gentle, Realistic or Tough. If you blank, say "I need a moment" to pause, or "Help me" for a sentence to start from.
After each session you see your pace, filler words, long pauses and how quickly you started, what to keep, and tips that quote you: "You said … / Try …". Retry this moment gives you 90 seconds on the same question so you can hear the difference. There's also a 5-session plan leading up to your interview day, with a reminder the day before.
When Big Interview is the better choice
- You've never prepared for an interview before. Structured lessons on question types, answer structure and salary talks will teach you more in an evening than unguided practice.
- Your school or agency already pays for it. Free is hard to argue with. Check your career center's page before buying anything.
- You want resume help in the same place. Speaking Coach doesn't review resumes.
- You prefer a one-time purchase. Big Interview lists a lifetime option.
- A career adviser will review your practice. A university-run account fits that workflow.
When Speaking Coach is the better choice
- You know the theory but your spoken answers fall apart. Talking to a partner who reacts, rather than recording into a button, is closer to the real room.
- Your interview isn't in English. Speaking Coach works in 20 languages, from Spanish and Hindi to Japanese and Arabic.
- You want short daily reps. A 30-second daily prompt and 90-second retries suit a 10-minute habit better than a course module.
- The interview is one of several hard conversations. The same app covers small talk before the interview, a presentation round, or asking for a raise later.
Using both
If your university gives you Big Interview, a sensible plan:
- Watch the lessons on behavioral questions and the STAR method first.
- Draft your three or four core stories with its answer builder.
- In the last week, say those stories out loud daily to a partner who follows up. Start with tell me about yourself, where most first impressions are made.
- On the final day, do one full mock at Realistic or Tough pressure and fix only the one thing the feedback flags.
Questions people ask

Yes. A William & Mary guide to its PracticeAI mode says the AI asks questions that relate to your previous answer or probe a point you made, and can draw on your uploaded resume.

Speaking Coach, which works in 20 languages. Big Interview's App Store page lists English only, as of October 2026.
