VirtualSpeech Alternatives: How to Practice Speaking Without VR?

You may not need an alternative to skip VR: as of October 2026, VirtualSpeech says it runs in the browser, with VR optional. If you want practice on your phone, try Speaking Coach, Orai or Speeko. If you want practice without a course structure, Speaking Coach, Yoodli or Huru (free, for interviews) let you jump straight into a conversation. If you do want VR, Ovation VR and Bodyswaps also offer headset practice.

What VirtualSpeech is now

If you think of VirtualSpeech as a VR app, its site tells a broader story. As of October 2026, it says "Practice the conversations that matter" and describes AI roleplays with characters that push back, presentation practice with slides and an audience that asks questions, skills coaching with an AI coach, and short exercises. It says it "Runs in the browser, with VR as an option. No headsets needed." VR is offered mainly to organizations, with Meta Quest support.

Its pricing page listed an individual plan at $45 a month or $399 a year, including the full content library, all practice types and AI feedback. Team and education plans are quoted.

So if your only problem was "I don't have a headset", try VirtualSpeech in your browser first. The alternatives below are for other reasons: you want to practice on a phone, you'd rather not follow a course, you want a lower price, or you want VR elsewhere. We make Speaking Coach, one of the options, so weigh our view accordingly.

On a phone

Most practice happens in small gaps, and a phone is what you have in them.

  • Speaking Coach (ours). An AI voice partner plays the other side: an interviewer who reads your CV, an audience while you swipe through your PDF slides, a customer, a manager, a stranger. It follows up on what you said. Afterwards you see pace, fillers, long pauses and how quickly you started, with tips that quote your words, and you can retry one moment for 90 seconds. 20 languages.
  • Orai and Speeko analyze recordings or live speech for pace, fillers and more, with short lessons or exercises. They don't talk back, but they're good for daily delivery drills.

Without a course structure

Courses suit people who want to learn a skill step by step and track progress. If you have one specific conversation coming up, a course can feel slow.

  • Speaking Coach lets you describe the situation ("my manager wants to cut my project; I have five minutes to argue for it") and the partner plays it.
  • Yoodli lets you pick an audience and rehearse, with optional follow-up questions.
  • Huru goes straight into an interview with follow-ups, free.

If you do want VR

VR's strength is the feeling of a room: faces, space, a lectern. If that's what you need to get used to, it's worth having.

  • Ovation VR describes about 18 venues, from a boardroom to a lecture hall, with AI avatars and feedback on fillers and pacing. It has a VR app, a web app and desktop apps for Windows and Mac; a mobile app was listed as in development.
  • Bodyswaps runs AI roleplays on desktop, browser, mobile or VR, mainly for colleges, healthcare and companies, with an option for individual learners and a free trial.
  • VirtualSpeech itself offers VR to organizations.

Getting the "room" without VR

Without a headset, you can still rehearse with presence:

  1. Stand up and speak at full volume, as you would in the room.
  2. Use your real slides and click through them as you talk.
  3. Have something interrupt you with a question halfway.
  4. Do one dress rehearsal with two or three real people. Our rehearsal plan shows how to space it out.

Questions people ask

Do I need a VR headset for VirtualSpeech?

No. As of October 2026, its site says it runs in the browser and that no headset is needed; VR is optional.

How much does VirtualSpeech cost?

Its pricing page listed $45 a month or $399 a year for individuals, as of October 2026. Team and education plans are priced on request.

Is VR practice better than practicing on a phone?

VR is better at simulating a room and a crowd. Phone practice is easier to do daily. Frequent short practice plus one rehearsal in front of real people is a practical mix for most goals; add VR if the room itself is what scares you.

What's the cheapest alternative to VirtualSpeech?

Huru is free for interview practice. For speeches and presentations, Orai's App Store prices are lower, and PowerPoint's Speaker Coach is free in preview for slide rehearsals.

Does Speaking Coach work in VR?

No. It's an app for iPhone and Android, plus a free voice review inside ChatGPT.
